Dover Regatta Core Group would like to thank the people of Dover who turned out to support the 12th Dover Regatta this weekend - it was very rewarding to see so many smiling faces despite the wind and rain.

Saturday morning started with the stall holders having to set up in very wet conditions but it wasn’t long before the familiar sound of beating drums from the dragon boats told us that Dover Regatta 2010 was underway. Once again we were delighted to have a flag raising ceremony with the help of Dover Sea Cadets – this ceremony is an important part of the Regatta as it marks the opening of the Regatta and gives us an opportunity to acknowledge all our armed forces who are serving both in this country and abroad.

The day continued with displays by the Newfoundland dogs, both in the water and along the promenade – these dogs always attract a large crowd and always enjoy the attention.

The Yacht race suffered from a lack of wind but still provided a stunning, colourful display as the yachts made their way across the Harbour.

The RNLI once again provided us with a fantastic display showing the excellent way that the Dover Lifeboat and the Walmer Inshore Lifeboat work together to provide such a vital service. It was of course a disappointment that the Air Sea Rescue helicopter was unable to take part due to a real emergency but it was still marvellous to see the Dover Lifeboat so close into shore.

Saturday evening saw the ever popular beach party on the Just Unique Roadshow stage hosted by Gordon Skeggs who as professionally as ever kept the large crowds entertained ably assisted by his team and well known local singer Lousie Orfilla together with some up coming local talent in the form of Jade and Kyra. The road show continued to entertain the crowds right up to the spectacular firework display provided this year for the first time by A J Pyrotechnics of Dover. Despite a technical hitch which caused a slight delay to the firing time it was unanimously agreed that it was certainly worth waiting for with fireworks both in the water and the skies.

Returning to the seafront on Sunday morning the weather looked slightly more promising but very quickly the winds picked up causing the rowing regatta to be cancelled for safety reasons. The weather didn’t put off the Newfoundland Dogs and they still managed their displays once again.

The parachute team, PWRR Tigers arrived and monitored the weather conditions for some time before it was decided that it was simply to risky to attempt the jump as the wind was too gusty.

The Lord Warden was on hand together the Mayor of Dover, Sue Jones to take the salute from the parade of sail which saw our yachts once again on the water and ably led around the Harbour by the Port of Dover Police Rib, Delta 99. All of the boats taking part had once again made a fantastic effort to decorate their vessels with one yacht even having a band on board! Once again the crowds were able to get a close up view of the lifeboat as it followed the parade around the Harbour.

The regatta ended with the traditional Songs of Praise courtesy of Christians Together in Dover and incorporating the Blessing of the Seas.

Once again we would like to thank all that attended the Regatta and supported the organising committee and the traders that turned out in far from ideal conditions. We are very pleased to have been able to provide a weekend of events for the community despite the many obstacles that had to be overcome this year. We look forward to seeing you all again next year when we hope to be able to add some new events and attractions to make the weekend even better – you never know we may even find some sunshine!!
